Who doesn’t love a great disaster movie? Or, let’s be honest, even a halfway decent one? There is something uniquely cathartic about the genre. Each film hits those favorite, familiar tropes: the “calm before the storm,” that chilling moment the characters realize just how dire the situation is, and the almost superhuman strength they summon just to survive one more hour.
While this list focuses specifically on natural disasters, the “end-of-the-world” itch can be scratched in many ways. If you’ve already burned through these, we’d also highly recommend alien and zombie thrillers like “Minority Report,” “28 Days Later” and “World War Z,” not to mention the entire dusty subgenre of “Mad Max”-inspired post-apocalyptic brawlers.
But for now? Strap in, hang on, and best of luck. We’re diving into Hollywood’s best world-ending comets, killer storms, and heart-attack-inducing reenactments of real-life tragedies.
‘Greenland’ (2020)
This surprisingly great Gerard Butler vehicle has officially become a modern classic, even spawning a sequel that’s currently earning its own rave reviews. In the original film, Butler and his family are among the lucky few in the U.S. selected for a safe evacuation flight as a planet-killing comet hurtles toward Earth. However, the “lottery” is only the beginning; getting the whole family on board is a brutal, desperate ordeal.
Director Ric Roman Waugh and screenwriter Chris Sparling expertly show how impending doom brings out both the absolute best and the terrifying worst in humanity. It feels remarkably grounded and realistic compared to the glossy, over-the-top antics of 2012, making it easily one of the most effective disaster movies to come along in years.

‘The Impossible’ (2012)
Director J.A. Bayona makes you feel every drop of water and every jagged piece of debris in this harrowing recreation of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in Thailand. The story follows a family separated by the wall of water as they struggle to find one another amidst the wreckage.
Naomi Watts earned a well-deserved Best Actress nomination as the severely injured mother who refuses to stop fighting — not just for herself, but for her son Lucas (played with heartbreaking vulnerability by a teenage Tom Holland) and a stranded toddler they rescue along the way. It’s a true story with a miraculous ending, but it is an emotionally wrenching journey. Just try not to lose it when Ewan McGregor finally gets a stranger’s phone to call home.

‘Twisters’ (2024)
Sure, the “science” of stopping a tornado here is pure cinematic invention, but “Twisters” is a massive, fun summer blockbuster that serves as a worthy successor to the 1996 original. The special effects are genuinely jaw-dropping, and the new generation of stormchasers — led by the magnetic Glenn Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones — are incredibly easy to root for.
There’s one specific scene that still gives us goosebumps: Powell’s brash “Tornado Wrangler” Tyler invites the serious scientist Kate to a local rodeo, but the fun is cut short as the wind ominously shifts. “The air feels heavy,” she says, seconds before every phone in the stadium screams with an alert. Their expertise kicks in instantly as they rush to save a crowd that has nowhere to hide.

‘The Day After Tomorrow’ (2004)
If you caught this in a theater back in the day, you probably held your breath when a trio of tornadoes — in Los Angeles, of all places — leveled the Hollywood sign. The effects still hold up. We also live for the iconic sequence where a massive tidal wave surges through the streets of Manhattan, forcing Jake Gyllenhaal and Emmy Rossum to sprint for the safety of the New York Public Library.
Does Dennis Quaid’s trek from D.C. to New York in subzero temperatures feel a bit unlikely? Sure. Did we really need the CGI wolves? Probably not. But we have zero complaints about those stunning, frozen scenes of devastation that redefined the genre for the 2000s.

‘Unstoppable’ (2010)
Tony Scott’s eminently rewatchable ticking-clock thriller is actually based on a terrifying real-life incident from 2001 (the “Crazy Eights” runaway train). Denzel Washington brings his signature gravitas to the role of Frank, a veteran engineer with three weeks left until retirement, while Chris Pine plays Will, the hotheaded young conductor who clashes with him from minute one.
When they realize they are the only crew in position to intercept an unmanned, out-of-control train loaded with toxic chemicals, they risk everything to bridge the gap. The supporting cast is stellar, featuring Rosario Dawson and a standout performance by Lew Temple as the remarkably unflappable welder, Ned. It’s lean, mean, and perfectly paced.

‘The Lost Bus’ (2025)
Paul Greengrass’s harrowing docudrama is a visceral look at the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise, California, the deadliest wildfire in the state’s history. Matthew McConaughey plays Kevin McKay, a bus driver already having a rough day between a sick son and a boss threatening to fire him.
When the fire traps 22 school children and their teacher (America Ferrera), McKay becomes their only hope. Greengrass uses his signature handheld camera style to make the audience feel the claustrophobia of driving through a literal forest of fire. You won’t just watch this movie; you’ll endure it right along with them.

‘Crawl’ (2019)
What’s worse than being trapped in a flooding basement during a Category 5 hurricane? Being trapped there with a pack of hungry, apex predators alligators. Alexandre Aja’s nail-biting thriller delivers every jump scare and close call you could possibly want from a “creature feature” disaster hybrid.
It’s lean, terrifying, and surprisingly grounded in the relationship between a daughter (Kaya Scodelario) and her father (Barry Pepper). Bonus: The dog survives. The humans, however, have to go through absolute hell to make it to the roof.
