Netflix has given us several limited series so far, but rarely does any of them match the level of the new limited show Adolescence. It is a story of a family that gets torn apart when 13-year-old Jamie gets accused and arrested for a brutal crime. So, it’s obvious that those who have watched the four-part crime miniseries want to know if it is based on a true story. Well, here’s all you need to know.
Is Adolescence Based on a True Story?
While many of you might think that Adolescence is inspired by a true story, we want you to know that it isn’t based on any particular real-life incident. The Venom star Stephen Graham, who plays the father of Jamie Miller, is also the co-writer of the show. In an interview, he shed light on the crime stories that inspired the horrifying story of Adolescence.
Graham said that they had a task of creating a real-time limited series, so it was challenging to figure out what should it be about. However, he soon read an article about the murder of a girl at the hands of a young boy. Later, again a couple of months later, Graham came across a similar crime news.
Knife crime has been steadily on the rise in the UK despite a decrease in homicides overall. Teenagers are over twice as likely to be fatally stabbed than they were 10 years ago, according to 2024 figures from the Office for National Statistics. – Stephen Graham
Graham was in the car with Philip Barantini, the director of Adolescence, and that’s when the duo discussed the idea. Besides that, it was the sensitivity of the young boys associated with these crimes that pushed Graham to start working on the pitch. He was sure that the series would certainly grab the attention of the audience.
Graham also showed his curiosity by asking what is happening to kids nowadays, and the social media and the Internet are responsible for exposing them to the darker side of their lives.
