John Abraham Feels Movies Like Chhaava & The Kashmir Files ‘Sway People In A Hyper Political Environment’

Bollywood actor John Abraham often stars in thought-provoking films based on real-life incidents. Having experimented with film genres, he has found his niche in films that laud Indian authorities and their love for the country. His upcoming film, Tehran, is also one such tale, inspired by the 2012 attacks on Israeli diplomats. In his recent interview, he opened up about why he actively chooses to avoid making nationalist movies like Chhaava and The Kashmir Files, which often spark controversies and become a topic of national debate.

Opening up about his decision to resist jumping on the bandwagon during an interview with India Today, the 52-year-old actor stressed on the importance of censorship due to “the way it has been overseen.” He added, “They have been good with us, but I have also been responsible with the way I have made my films. I am not right or left wing. I am apolitical.”

Abraham explains that he always remains cautious about the message his films might send. He shares that what worries him is that “right-wing films” finding a “huge audience.” At that point, according to him, is the time a filmmaker should ask themselves which line they should toe. “Am I going to take the commercial line or I’m going to stay true to what I want to say — and I have chosen the latter,” News18 quoted him saying.

When asked if he is also tempted to make movies like Chhaava or The Kashmir Files, which have become a topic of national debate upon their release, John added, “I haven’t seen Chhaava, but I know that people have loved it and also The Kashmir Files. When films are being made with the intent to sway people in a hyper political environment and such films find an audience, that is scary for me. To answer your question, no, I have never been tempted, and I will never make those kind of films.”
