Microsoft extends support for Office apps until October 2028 on Windows 10

Microsoft will extend support for Microsoft 365 (Office) apps on Windows 10 through October 10, 2028. This decision comes after the company originally planned to end support on October 14, 2025, which is the end-of-life date for Windows 10.

This extension provides a buffer for users still on Windows 10, especially those facing challenges upgrading to Windows 11 as a result of unsupported hardware or other considerations. The new decision will ensure that users can continue receiving security updates for Microsoft 365 apps, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, for an additional three years beyond the original cutoff at no extra cost.

Although the new extension ensures that users can continue using these tools, it’s the logical choice since many users who struggle to upgrade to Windows 11 are likely to opt into the Extended Security Updates (ESU) subscription to continue using Windows 10, and the program makes the operating system usable for another three years.

I switched to Windows 11 a few years ago and haven’t noticed significant issues that would negatively affect the overall experience. However, I have previously published a guide with the steps to roll back from Windows 11 24H2 to 23H2, as many users have been complaining about problems with the latest release of the operating system.

If you have a computer with unsupported hardware, you can still upgrade to Windows 11 to maintain continuity of security and maintenance updates and continue running the Microsoft 365 apps without issues.

Another reason Microsoft is extending support for these tools is that Office 2024 (the version that offers the suite of apps for a one-time payment) will be supported until October 2029, and this would make it a better option than the subscription-based version.
