Movies playing in Southeast Michigan, new releases Oct. 10 – The Oakland Press

The following list includes movies available at local theaters, and movies that are available to watch through online streaming and video on demand services including: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, Hulu, Vudu, FandangoNow, Apple TV+, YouTube, Disney+, HBO Max and more.

• “Tron: Ares” (PG-13): Disney film about a highly sophisticated program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. Starring Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, with Gillian Anderson and Jeff Bridges. In theaters, Oct. 10.

• “Roofman” (R): Based on a true story about Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum), an Army veteran and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname: Roofman. After escaping prison, he secretly lives inside a Toys “R” Us for six months. Then he falls for Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a divorced mom, and his double life begins to unravel. Also starring Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Peter Dinklage, Juno Temple and Jimmy O. Yang. In theaters, Oct. 10.

• “Kiss of the Spider Woman” (R): A political prisoner named Valentín (Diego Luna) shares a cell with Molina (Tonatiuh), a window dresser convicted of public indecency. They form an unlikely bond as Molina recounts a Hollywood musical plot starring Ingrid Luna (Jennifer Lopez). Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical hit. In theaters, Oct. 10.

• “Soul on Fire” (PG): A tragic accident leaves 9-year-old John O’Leary with burns covering 100% of his body. He embarks on a miraculous road to recovery with support from family and the community and becomes a motivational speaker. Based on O’Leary’s bestselling memoir, “On Fire”, starring Joel Courtney, John Corbett, William H. Macy and Masey McLain. In theaters, Oct. 10.

• “Bone Lake” (R): A couple’s romantic vacation at a secluded lakeside estate gets upended when they’re forced to share a mansion with a mysterious and attractive couple. Starring Maddie Hasson, Andra Nechita, Alex Roe and Eliane Reis.

• “The Smashing Machine” (R): The story of legendary mixed martial arts and UFC fighter Mark Kerr. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Ryan Bader and Bas Rutten.

• “Anemone” (R): A man sets out to reunite with his brother who has been living in isolation in the woods of northern England for 20 years. The film explores the family bonds between brothers, fathers, and sons. Written by Daniel Day-Lewis and Ronan Day-Lewis. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sean Bean and Samantha Morton.

• “Good Boy” (PG-13): A man moves into a new home that has dark supernatural forces lurking. As he begins to succumb to the darkness, his brave dog comes to the rescue. Starring Larry Fessenden, Shane Jensen, Stuart Rudin and Anya Krawcheck.

• “The Strangers-Chapter 2” (R): After learning that one of their victims, Maya, is still alive, three masked maniacs return to finish the job. Starring Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez, Gabriel Basso and Ema Horvath.

• “Gabby’s Dollhouse-The Movie” (NR): DreamWorks Animation elevates its streaming series into its first ever cinematic adventure. In the new film, Gabby (Laila Lockhart Kraner) heads out on a road trip with her Grandma Gigi (Gloria Estefan) to the urban wonderland of Cat Francisco. But when Gabby’s dollhouse ends up in the hands of an eccentric cat lady named Vera (Kristen Wiig), Gabby sets off on an adventure through the real world to get the Gabby Cats back.

• “One Battle After Another” (R): Washed-up revolutionary Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio) lives in a state of stoned paranoia, surviving off-grid with his self-reliant daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). When his evil nemesis (Sean Penn) resurfaces after 16 years and Willa goes missing, Bob scrambles to find her. Also starring Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall and Teyana Taylor.

• “Eleanor the Great” (PG-13): Eleanor Morgenstein (June Squibb) is a spirited 94-year-old who unknowingly wanders into a support group where she doesn’t quite belong, and tells a tale that brings her a  level of attention she did not intend. Starring June Squibb, Erin Kellyman, Jessica Hecht, Rita Zohar and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Directed by Scarlett Johansson.

• “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” (R): Through a twist of fate, single strangers Sarah and David who meet at a mutual friend’s wedding, get to relive important moments from their respective pasts. Starring Margot Robbie, Colin Farrell, Calahan Skogman and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

• “Him” (R): Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers) is a rising quarterback who suffers a potentially career-ending injury after being attacked by an unhinged fan. He then receives a lifeline when his hero, Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans), offers to train him at an isolated compound. Also starring Julia Fox, Guapdad 4000 and Tim Heidecker.

• “Downton Abbey-The Grand Finale” (PG): Latest movie in the Downton Abbey franchise that follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s. Mary becomes the center of a public scandal and the family faces financial trouble. Starring Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery and Elizabeth McGovern.

• “The Long Walk” (R): Adaptation of Stephen King’s first-written novel, directed by Francis Lawrence about a group of young men in a dystopian future who embark on a life-or-death marathon with no set finish line. Starring Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Jordan Gonzalez, Joshua Odjick, Josh Hamilton, with Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill.

• “Demon Slayer-Kimetsu No Yaiba” (R): Fantasy/Anime film, Tanjiro Kamado and other members of the Demon Slayer Corps find themselves in an epic battle at Infinity Castle.

• “The Conjuring-Last Rites” (R): Sequel to “The Conjuring 3” with paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren trying to vanquish a demon from a family’s home. Starring Vera Farmiga, Mia Tomlinson, Taissa Farmiga and Patrick Wilson.
