PAW PAW, Mich. — Troopers with the Michigan State Police (MSP) Paw Paw Post will be distributing Naloxone on Sept. 2 in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 31 as well as National Recovery Month in September.
From January to June, MSP said there were 11 reported deaths involving carfentanil — a potent fentanyl variant that has been recently showing up in the unregulated drug supply.
However, none of these tested positive for carfentanil alone, according to MSP, 10 of which included cocaine whereas eight included fentanyl.
The deaths were reported in Ingham, Livingston, Eaton, Genesee, Oakland, and Wayne Counties, though troopers and officials with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services are urging Southwest Michigan communities to remain vigilant while the region faces ongoing opioid overdose issues.
“Law enforcement can’t address this alone, so we’re distributing Naloxone, a life-saving nasal spray medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, with community support,” F/Lt. Scott Ernstes, MSP Paw Paw Post commander, said.
MSP shared the following tips for the community:
- Carry Naloxone. It can save lives and requires no prescription.
- Don’t use alone. Using opioids with someone trained to respond reduces fatal overdose risk.
- Seek help. Call the Michigan Opioid Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for confidential support and treatment referrals.
Troopers will be distributing Naloxone during business hours at the Paw Paw post, located at 43255 60th Ave.
