Nationwide drug recall for popular muscle relaxer in effect: FDA

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A popular muscle relaxer made in New Jersey is being recalled due to a label swap, according to the FDA. The product was distributed nationwide to distributors, the recall stated.

One lot of Cyclobenzaprine Hydrochloride Tablets USP 10 mg (Flexiril), containing 90-count bottles, is being recalled after the drug’s label was mistakenly placed on bottles of Meloxicam.

The drug was produced at a Unichem Pharmaceutical lab in East Brunswick, officials said. The company issued a voluntary recall at the end of August, according to the FDA.

“For patients who unknowingly take Meloxicam, there is a reasonable probability of serious adverse events, including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, anaphylaxis, and skin reactions, particularly in those patients taking concomitant non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and/or blood thinners, those who have allergies to Meloxicam, or those with underlying illness,” read the recall announcement.

The mislabeled bottles of Cyclobenzaprine can be identified by lot number GMML24026A, with an expiration date of September 2027, and the NDC 29300-415-19 printed on the label of the 90-count bottles.

Retail pharmacies should not dispense products from this lot number.

If consumers believe they have received this drug from the affected lot, they should contact their physician or healthcare provider.

Meloxicam is an anti-inflammatory medication commonly used to treat arthritis, whereas Cyclobenzaprine is a muscle relaxer used to relieve muscle spasms, the FDA said.

There have been no reports of adverse events related to this recall, officials said.

PIX11 News reached out to Unichem Pharmaceutical, but the company was not immediately available to comment.
