WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) warns the public to watch out for discolored water, as it could signal algal blooms.
According to NCDEQ’s Division of Water Resources, certain algae can produce toxins that lead to adverse health effects in humans and pets known as harmful algal blooms (HABs).
“Algal blooms can appear as surface scums, which look like spilled paint, and can be bright green, red, brown or blue; they can appear as algal mats, or as dense, macroscopic growths that float on the water surface; and lastly, they can appear as discoloration throughout the water column,” NCDEQ officials wrote in a press release.
The NC Department of Health and Human Services Division of Public Health recommends avoiding contact with algae blooms.
To report an algal bloom, you can reach out to the nearest NCDEQ regional office or on its website.
