Netflix’s New Action Movie Slammed With Review Bombing

Over the last 10–15 years, both Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton have become two of the hottest names in Hollywood. Theron is an Oscar-winner for her performance in Monster (2003), and she’s also been nominated twice more for her performances in North Country (2006) and Bombshell (2019). Theron is also a massive blockbuster action star with hits under her belt like The Old Guard and Atomic Blonde. As for Egerton, he first blossomed into a star thanks to his role as Eggsy in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman movies, and he also earned an Emmy nomination a few years ago for his work in Apple TV’s critically acclaimed prison thriller, Black Bird. Back in 2024, Egerton starred in one of the biggest Netflix movies ever, Carry-On, and now he and Theron have teamed up for Netflix’s latest action blockbuster.
Theron and Egerton headline Apex, which aims to take the title from War Machine (starring Alan Ritchson) to become Netflix’s biggest movie of 2026 so far. The film was just unleashed onto streaming last Friday, but it’s already in the #1 spot in more than 50 countries worldwide. While the film has mostly been a hit with critics, it’s heading into review-bombing territory from fans, though. Not only does it sit at a Rotten 56% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter that’s dropping by the day, but fans on social media are hammering the film with harsh criticisms, particularly surrounding plot details like Theron’s Sasha defeating Egerton’s Ben in the end. It’s quite puzzling to see fans at odds over this ending, though, as Theron’s Sasha is painted as the hero from the beginning and Egerton’s Ben is a murderous, cannibalistic psychopath with no discernible qualities to root for.

What Is ‘Apex’ About?
Apex follows Sasha, a woman who is out on a climbing journey with her partner Tommy (played by Eric Bana), but tragedy strikes when Tommy falls to his death. This sends Sasha to his home country of Australia to seek solace in the wilderness, but it isn’t long before she runs into Ben, who initially poses as a friendly, helpful tour guide of the dangerous forests and falls. What starts as friendly quickly turns to fright as Sasha finds herself on the run from Ben, who is hunting her through territory that’s unfamiliar to her.
