NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Celebrates New State-of-the-Art Grossing Room
The renovated space will significantly enhance the Pathology Department’s ability to provide the essential data and diagnoses needed to deliver compassionate, evidence-based, and timely care

New York, NY — NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue today celebrated the opening of its newly renovated grossing room, a major investment in the hospital’s Pathology Department that will significantly enhance diagnostic capacity, safety, and workflow efficiency. The $400,000 renovation replaces outdated equipment and expands the number of functional grossing stations from two to five, supporting the hospital’s growing patient volume and its role as a teaching site for pathology residents.
A grossing station is a specialized workspace where pathologists and laboratory technologists/technicians examine and prepare tissue samples for diagnostic analysis. Grossing refers to the initial, macroscopic examination and dissection of surgical specimens, where tissue is measured, described, and sectioned to identify potential areas of concern. This critical first step, combined with subsequent microscopic evaluation, is used to detect tumors, diagnose infections, identify inflammatory conditions, and uncover genetic disorders.
“The opening of our new grossing room marks a major step forward for Bellevue Hospital and for the patients who depend on timely and accurate diagnoses,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief Executive Officer Dr. Eric Wei. “Bellevue Hospital cares for some of the most medically complex and diverse patients in New York City. These upgraded stations create a safer, more modern environment for our pathologists and laboratorians and support the world class care we strive to deliver every day.”
Bellevue Hospital’s previous grossing room had become inadequate for the hospital’s expanding needs. Several stations had become nonfunctional, with a layout that limited productivity and teaching capacity, even as patient census and surgical volume continued to rise.
The expanded capacity will allow the department to process a higher volume of specimens with greater speed and precision. Patients will benefit from faster turnaround times and more efficient diagnostic workflows, helping ensure that treatment decisions can be made without delay.
“Modernizing our grossing room reinforces Bellevue Hospital’s commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, and timely diagnostics for every patient we serve,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief Operating Officer Erfan Karim, MPH. “This upgraded space gives our pathology teams the environment and equipment they need to work efficiently and accurately, and it strengthens our capacity as a major teaching site preparing the next generation of pathologists.”
The new grossing room reflects Bellevue Hospital’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the Pathology Department’s critical role in patient care, education, and systemwide leadership.
“The new grossing stations provide a safe, organized, and efficient environment for our pathologists and residents,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Laboratory Director and Chief of Pathology Jessica Jacobson, MD. “This welcome renovation will allow us to expand our capacity to meet the increase in patient and surgical volume, both of which have grown 15% compared to pre-COVID volumes. The expanded grossing stations will also increase efficiency, ensuring that our hardworking pathologists meet industry standards, producing reliable results within three working days for most biopsies and seven days for most complex surgical cases.”
As the hospital’s diagnostic backbone, the Pathology Department provides the critical information clinicians rely on to make accurate diagnoses, guide treatment decisions, and monitor disease progression. Pathology provides rapid, often lifesaving information during emergencies, including transfusion support, infectious disease detection, and urgent surgical pathology.
“Pathology plays a central and indispensable role at Bellevue Hospital, supporting nearly every aspect of patient care,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Associate Executive Director for Clinical Ancillary Services Patience Mancho. “From quality control in laboratory testing to identifying infectious outbreaks, pathology is essential in maintaining high standards of safety and public health within the hospital and community.”
“Our pathologists evaluate thousands of tissue samples, biopsies, blood tests, and cytology specimens each year, providing precise diagnostic information that shapes patient care plans,” added Matthew R. Jackson, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM, Administrative Director, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Services at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. “They work closely with surgical teams, analyzing specimens from the operating room to confirm diagnoses such as cancer, infections, inflammatory diseases, and organ dysfunction. Their work is essential for determining tumor type, stage, and margins, all of which directly impact patient outcomes and treatment pathways.”
