One of the Best Disney Movies Ever Made Is Gaining Heat on Streaming Charts 15 Years Later

Tangled, Disney’s take on Rapunzel, has found a second life on Disney+, almost 15 years after its release. The 2010 animated movie has entered the platform’s Top 10 most-watched titles this week as per FlixPatrol, which is a surprising comeback for a movie that had already made its mark years ago in theaters.

When Tangled first premiered in November 2010, it was one of the most expensive animated films ever produced by Disney, with a production budget of around $260 million. It cost a hefty sum, mainly because of the complex modern animation and the six-year time period in production. However, the expense paid off for Disney because it went on to be a blockbuster hit with over $591 million in earnings, including $200 million in the United States alone, and $391 million internationally. Tangled was also Disney’s 50th animated feature, which played a major role in the studio’s modern revival era.

Since its release, Tangled has maintained a loyal fan base through merchandise, TV tie-ins, and its consistent availability on streaming platforms. It was also praised for its music, humor, and computer animation. Its soundtrack, in particular, earned it an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. The film holds an 89% critics rating and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 7.7/10 rating on IMDB.

Disney’s Planned ‘Tangled’ Live-Action Remake Has Been Paused

Disney had been developing a live-action remake of Tangled, but the project has now been put on hold by the studio. The film was still in its early stages, with The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey on board and screenwriter Jennifer Katen Robinson working on the script. The news came earlier this year, in April, shortly after Disney’s latest live-action release, Snow White, underperformed at the box office. Despite a massive production budget of $270 million, the film grossed only $69 million in the United States and $145 million worldwide. These disappointing numbers have led Disney to rethink several of its upcoming adaptations, including Tangled.

For now, it is not clear whether the Rapunzel story will be revived in live-action form at a later date. However, Gigi Hadid, in an interview with Vogue, revealed that she had auditioned for the role of Rapunzel before the company decided to pause production.
