OpenAI hints at a big upgrade for ChatGPT Operator Agent

ChatGPT’s Operator, which is still in research preview, will soon become a “very useful tool,” according to Jerry Tworek, VP of Research at OpenAI.

OpenAI announced Operator for $200 Pro subscribers in January, and it allows users to delegate web tasks to the AI agent.

The idea behind Operator, which is an AI agent, is to automate the repetitive browser tasks that do not require any attention from users.

Instead of using a browser to look for stuff on the internet, you can allow Operator to do it for you. For example, you can ask Operator to fill forms, order food, and groceries.

However, Operator in its current state isn’t productive or useful and often fails at basic tasks.

OpenAI promises a new useful Operator experience

In a Reddit ask-me-anything (AMA), OpenAI said that it has plans to release several significant improvements for Operator.

“We also already have a product surface that can do things on your computer – it’s called operator, it’s still a research preview, but we’re planning to make some improvements soon and it can become a very useful tool then,” Jerry Tworek, who is a VP of Research at OpenAI, wrote in a Reddit post.

Jerry Tworek also hinted that OpenAI could bring all of these tools together so it feels like one thing, perhaps a platform of AI.

We don’t know the approach yet, but OpenAI previously confirmed that it has plans to integrate multiple products or models into GPT-5, which is the company’s next foundational model.
