Perdue notified the USDA and recalled the products after consumers reported finding metal wire in the breaded chicken. “There were three consumer complaints prior to our voluntary recall and there have been no reports of illnesses or injuries associated with the product,” said Andrea Staub, a spokesperson for Perdue Foods.
If you have these products in your freezer, throw them away or return them to the store where you bought them for a refund. “Don’t take the chance. You usually can’t tell whether something is in there just by looking at the food,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety research and testing at Consumer Reports. In this case, Perdue determined “the material to be a very thin strand of metal wire,” the company said in a statement.
“Although no one has been hurt in this situation, biting into food that contains metal or other foreign matter, like pieces of plastic or rubber, may cause injury. The materials can be choking hazards, or cause mouth lacerations, digestive issues, and other problems,” Rogers says.
This is the sixth time this year that meat and poultry products have been recalled because foreign materials were found in the food, according to the USDA.
