Pierce Brosnan is most recognized for his legendary portrayal of James Bond in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day.
However, prior to becoming 007, he appeared in a now-overlooked 1992 sci-fi horror film, The Lawnmower Man, which featured revolutionary visual effects and sparked multiple legal battles with horror author Stephen King, who had written a short story with the identical title.
Although The Lawnmower Man certainly hasn’t stood the test of time after three decades, it serves as the ideal film to view if you’re seeking an outrageous so-terrible-it’s-entertaining narrative featuring ’90s computer animation and devastatingly handsome Pierce Brosnan as a deranged scientist.
The Lawnmower Man, which maintains a dismal 35% critics’ score on the review compilation site Rotten Tomatoes, was helmed and co-penned by Brett Leonard, with producer Gimel Everett also functioning as co-writer.
The movie is loosely inspired by a Stephen King short story sharing the same title, though the renowned author disapproved of the adaptation and pursued legal action against the filmmakers on numerous occasions regarding the usage of his name, reports the Irish Star.
King initially launched a lawsuit in 1992 to remove his name from the production, which was originally intended to be called ‘Stephen King’s The Lawnmower Man. ‘ The writer contended that the movie “bore no meaningful resemblance” to the original story.
Despite successfully taking legal action against New Line Cinema, the studio was determined to be in contempt of court in 1994 when the home video release retained King’s name in the title. The Lawnmower Man features Jeff Fahey as Jobe Smith, an intellectually disabled grass cutter, and Pierce as Dr. Lawrence ‘Larry’ Angelo, a scientist who conducts experiments on Jobe using virtual reality technology and nootropic drugs in an effort to enhance his intelligence.
While aspects of the storyline are problematic and haven’t aged gracefully, The Lawnmower Man was revolutionary in its examination of artificial intelligence and virtual reality.
Although the film isn’t necessarily of high quality, it has garnered a devoted fan base for its rudimentary yet innovative computer graphics and, naturally, Pierce Brosnan’s renowned good looks.
