Sundarakanda, the latest Telugu romantic comedy, features Nara Rohith, Sridevi Vijaykumar, and Virti Vaghani in lead roles. Directed by Venkatesh Nimmalapudi, the film hit the screens today. Let’s see how it fares.
Story:
Siddharth (Nara Rohith) has everything in life but refuses to marry because no woman matches the five qualities he insists on in his partner. One day, he comes across a college girl, Aira (Virti Vaghani), who sparks his curiosity. Determined to find out if she fits his checklist, he travels to Vizag in search of her. After a few interactions, he proposes, and though hesitant due to the age gap, Aira agrees. However, Siddharth soon faces an unexpected revelation that changes the course of his love Story. Why has he remained single all these years? What exactly are the five principles he clings to? And who is Vaishnavi (Sridevi Vijaykumar), and what role does she play in this tale? These questions form the crux of the narrative.
Plus Points:
After his intense role in Bhairavam, Nara Rohith slips into a lighter character that suits him well. He handles comedy with ease and delivers effectively in the emotional portions of the second half.
Virti Vaghani gets a well-written role and makes the most of it. She delivers a confident performance, particularly in her emotional exchanges with Rohith. If she continues to pick strong scripts, she has a promising future.
Sridevi Vijaykumar looks graceful and plays her part with dignity. Her role carries weight in the Story, and she executes it naturally without overdoing anything.
Satya’s comedy adds a good dose of entertainment, and his timing works well. Vasuki Anand as Rohith’s sister is apt, while Sunaina Badam and Abhinav Gomatam make their presence felt.
The interval twist stands out as a major plus. It arrives as a genuine surprise and keeps the audience engaged in the second half as well. The director manages to handle both halves neatly, maintaining curiosity even after revealing the twist.
Minus Points:
While the setup is engaging, the core Story feels familiar and reminds us of a Bollywood film. After the interval, the proceedings could have been more heartfelt and layered, but the director leans more towards comedy than emotion.
Some sequences go overboard or feel preachy, which might test the patience of those expecting breezy entertainment. A few cinematic liberties stretch believability, and certain supporting characters, like Naresh and Abhinav Gomatam, are underutilized — their presence could have added more fun.
Technical Aspects:
For a debutant, Venkatesh Nimmalapudi handles the film with decent control. He maintains a good flow and ensures there are no dull stretches for the most part.
Pradeesh Varma’s cinematography is adequate, while Rohan Chillale’s editing is sharp though a bit more trimming could have improved the pace. Production values are solid, and the costume design by Harsha and Poojitha Tadikonda deserves praise for the vibrant styling, especially in Virti’s outfits.
Music by Leon James is one of the film’s biggest assets. The songs are well-placed, and at least a couple of them stand out. His background score also elevates key moments.
Verdict:
On the whole, Sundarakanda is a watchable romantic comedy that works mainly because of its lead performances and humor. Nara Rohith fits well into his role, Virti Vaghani delivers a strong performance, and Sridevi Vijaykumar adds grace. Satya’s comedy is another highlight. On the downside, the predictable Story, a few unnecessary scenes, and some over-the-top moments dilute the impact. Still, with clean entertainment and no vulgarity, it is a safe family watch. This festive season, Sundarakanda can be considered a lighthearted option for those looking for a simple comedy ride in theaters.
