Troll 2 Gets Its Netflix Streaming Date

The sequel to one of Netflix’s biggest movies of all time is set to arrive on the streaming platform exactly three years after the original. Troll 2 is set for a new epic rampage on the streaming service this December.

Troll debuted on Netflix on Dec. 1, 2022, and became a surprise hit for the streaming platform. The Norwegian monster movie is currently the most popular non-English-language movie ever on Netflix. The film was also generally well received by critics, earning a 90% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (though it lacks the “Certified Fresh” badge usually associated with such a high score, as the under-the-radar film has too few aggregated reviews to qualify). The film, which sees the eponymous creature awakening in Norway and going on a rampage, proved more polarizing with Rotten Tomatoes’ audience voters, scoring only 50% on the Popcornmeter. That said, 103,000,000 views and 178,600,000 hours streamed on Netflix can’t be wrong, right?

It took about a year for reports of a Troll sequel to begin surfacing. Filming on Troll 2 began in Norway in 2024. The production soon became the biggest film project ever to take place in the Nordic countries, according to reports. Netflix released the Troll 2 trailer in October.

Can Troll 2 live up to the epic hype of its record-setting predecessor? It should be interesting to see how the film performs, given how crowded the giant monster movie space has become, including the resurgence of Godzilla movies in recent years, from Shin Godzilla to Godzilla Minus One to the Monsterverse of Godzilla x Kong. Is there an appetite for a take on the genre steeped in Norwegian folklore? Fans don’t have long to wait to decide as the creature is set to awaken at the start of December.

Troll 2 Brings the Hit Monster Movie Back to Netflix

Roar Uthaug, who directed the original Troll for production studio Motion Blur, hot off his Tomb Raider movie, returned to helm Troll 2. The sequel’s cast includes returning stars Ine Marie Wilmann, Gard B. Eidsvold, Kim Falck, and Mads Pettersen.

However, the titular mythical beast is not the same one from the first Troll movie. Netflix’s official Troll 2 synopsis teases “an all-new threat” as “a dangerous new troll wakes up and goes on a rampage.”

Of course, for those who missed the original Troll when it first came to Netflix, the film is still streaming, and there’s plenty of time to check it out before Troll 2 arrives. In that film, per Netflix’s summary, “a project to build a railway through the Dovre Mountains awakens a sleeping giant who’s been in captivity for a thousand years. With the massive creature destroying everything in its path, the government calls in paleontology professor Nora Tidemann (Ine Marie Wilmann). She, along with her father (Gard B. Eidsvold) and a ragtag band of assistants, attempt to figure out what is causing this mayhem and how to stop it before it reaches Oslo.”

Troll 2will debut on Netflix on Dec. 1.Troll is currently streaming on Netflix.
