W.Va. announces lawsuit against Express Scripts

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) — West Virginia Attorney General J.B. McCuskey has announced a lawsuit against what he calls an “architect” of the opioid crisis in West Virginia.

The lawsuit, filed on Friday, is against Express Scripts, a pharmacy benefit manager organization in the United States.

McCuskey says the company played a pivotal role in the crisis, enabled the widespread supply of opioids, and worked to keep its role obscure from the public.

During a press conference Monday, McCuskey claimed Express Scripts fueled an opioid crisis from behind the scenes while projecting an image of public concerns.

Express Scripts is accused of conspiring with opioid manufacturers as well as securing preferred formulary placement for opioids, which thereby incentivized the prescription of opioids.
