SALT LAKE CITY — Officials from the Salt Lake County Health Department said Tuesday they’ve detected West Nile Virus in multiple “mosquito pools” within Salt Lake County.
According to a press release from the SLCo Heath Department, these “mosquito pools” are a group of mosquitoes caught and tested out of a single trap.
The mosquito pools tested positive in areas all over Salt Lake County, including in the downtown and Sugar House area.
Health officials are urging the public to take precautions against mosquito bites to avoid exposure, regardless of where you are.
“There will be a growing number of mosquitoes carrying the disease,” said Mary Hill, SLCoHD Epidemiology Bureau Manager, “so it is now especially important that Utahns protect themselves from mosquito bites, particularly in the hours from dusk to dawn.”
The health department said if you think you have been exposed to West Nile Virus to contact your health care provider.
