Will War 2 beat Pathaan to become the biggest opener in the franchise?

The YRF Spy Universe has given Bollywood some of its biggest blockbusters, and with War 2 on the way, fans are eager to see if it can rewrite history at the box office. Over the years, films like Pathaan (2023) with Shah Rukh Khan, War (2019) starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff, and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) with Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif have set massive benchmarks.

Currently, Pathaan holds the record for the highest opening day in the Spy Universe with ₹55.72 crore nett. War is close behind at ₹50.61 crore nett, followed by Tiger 3 (₹40.88 crore nett), Tiger Zinda Hai (₹34.14 crore nett), and Ek Tha Tiger (₹30.61 crore nett), each setting new milestones at the time of release. Pathaan, War, and ETT have been the record openers at the time, while Tiger Zinda Hai was the biggest non holiday opener at the time. Tiger 3 clearly underperformed.

War 2 opening day:

War 2 is set to be the widest release in the franchise so far, and trade experts believe it has the potential to surpass Pathaan’s record. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the film will bring together Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, making it one of the most biggest action spectacles in Indian cinema. With high-octane sequences, global locations, and a massive marketing push, the stage seems perfectly set. Will it script history? 

If audience reception matches the hype, War 2 could not only become the biggest opener in the Spy Universe but also mark the highest opening day of Hrithik Roshan’s career. With early projections, War 2 seems like a 50 crore opener and anything less than that would be an underwhelming result. The film has potential to hit 60 crore nett opening, which has only been achieved by Jawan in Bollywood and Pushpa 2’s Hindi version. If it can reach there, then it will a new record.

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 stars Hrithik Roshan in the lead role, while Kiara Advani replaces Vaani Kapoor as the leading lady. South star Jr. NTR is the antagonist. The film will be released in cinemas on independence Day 2025 weekend.
