Windows 11 receives September 2024 Update (KB5041587) as preview

• Windows 11 builds 22631.4108 and 22621.4108 (KB5041587) are now available for versions 23H2 and 22H2.
• This update is available through the Release Preview Channel with fixes and some visual improvements.
• These builds will later be available as optional installs before rolling out as the next Patch Tuesday update.

Microsoft began testing the September 2024 Update for Windows 11 with the release of builds 22631.4108 and 22621.4108 as the update KB5041587 for versions 23H2 and 22H2 in the Release Preview Channel.

According to the official notes pushed on August 19, 2024, the update KB5041587 brings some visual changes as well as a number of fixes.

In this release, versions 23H2 and 22H2, Windows 11 is gradually introducing a new option in the “Share” interface from File Explorer to share files directly into your Android phone once the device is connected through the Phone Link app.

Also, this update speeds up the Windows Narrator scan mode, and you can now dictate the characters you spell at a faster speed with Voice Access.

Furthermore, available immediately, the update KB5041587 updates the Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA) profiles for specific mobile operators.

Microsoft also notes Bluetooth issues where certain policies can cause external devices to disconnect. On File Explorer, the navigation pane might not refresh correctly when browsing folders within a shell namespace extension. If you use hibernate, repeatedly closing and opening the laptop lid might lead to the system becoming unresponsive after resuming hibernation.

In addition, a potential memory leak can occur when closing a window with a combo box with input focus. The European Digital Markets Act (DMA) mandated SSO notice might appear too frequently when authenticating with a certificate. An SCCM task to re-enable UWF can fail due to a deadlock, preventing the device from restarting as expected and accessing symbolic links, which might cause the system to become unresponsive.

It’s important to note that while version 22H2 is getting an update in September, this release will reach the end of support on October 8, 2024, for Windows 11 Home and Pro. As a result, it’s recommended to upgrade as soon as possible to version 23H2.

The KB5041587 release is a non-security update that is currently available in the Release Preview Channel through the Windows Insider Program. In the coming days, the update will be available through the Stable Channel as an optional update with a slightly different KB and build number, and then, on September 10, 2024, the fixes and improvements will roll out with a new KB and build number but the Patch Tuesday update.
