3 Under-the-Radar Hulu Movies I Can’t Wait to Watch This Weekend (October 31- November 2)

Are you ready to whip this Halloween weekend? That’s what you’ll get if you log on to Hulu, which is streaming one of the best sports movies of the last 20 years, Whip It.

If watching women duke it out on a roller derby isn’t your thing, then watch Bruce Willis endure yet another Christmas from Hell in Die Hard 2.

Indie film nerds, we haven’t forgotten you! For those with sensitive souls, Watch With Us recommends streaming one of Wes Anderson’s underrated flicks, The Darjeeling Limited.

‘Whip It’ (2009)

Bliss Cavendar (Elliot Page) is a Texas teen still finding out who she is when she stumbles upon the Hurl Scouts, an all-female roller derby squad whose raucous and sometimes violent contests pique her curiosity. She tries out for and joins the squad, and her life changes for the better – she stands up to her school bully and feels more comfortable with herself. But her beauty queen mother, Brooke (Marcia Gay Harden), disapproves, and Bliss is forced to quit the sport she loves. Can she convince her family she’s born to be a roller derby queen?

Directed by Drew Barrymore, Whip It is a rousing sports movie filled with riot grrrl energy and across-the-board fantastic performances. As the squad’s resident bitch, Iron Maven, Juliette Lewis has some standout moments as a thirtysomething woman who resents her new team member’s youth and optimism, while Oscar-winner Gay Harden is reliably terrific as Bliss’ stressed-out mom, who is more sympathetic than you might think. The roller derby sequences are so exciting to watch, they will inspire you to lace up your old skates and go for a round or two at your local skating rink.

‘Die Hard 2’ (1990)

We’re getting closer to Christmas, which means many people are already firing up perennial holiday classics like Elf, It’s a Wonderful Life and — Die Hard? The 1988 Bruce Willis action movie is now a holiday staple, but everyone has it all wrong – it’s Die Hard 2 that deserves that status. It’s louder, better and more inventive than the original, and it also has tons of snow and festive bloodshed to get you in the mood.

As police officer John McClane (Willis) waits for his wife’s plane to land at Washington D.C.’s Dulles International Airport, he discovers a plot to free a captured international terrorist whose plane is also due to land. John can’t let that happen, especially after his wife’s plane can’t land due to a power outage caused by the terrorist’s criminal pals. Once again, John is celebrating Christmas by shooting bad guys and dodging explosions, but is his holiday luck about to run out?

Since there were three sequels after this one, the answer is no, but it’s a testament to Die Hard 2’s intensity that you still second-guess if John will make it out alive or not. The film skillfully blends spectacular action set pieces – the climactic plane explosion is still impressive – with sarcastic humor that made the original such a classic.

‘The Darjeeling Limited’ (2007)

Wes Anderson is rightly regarded as a master director, but even he has had his misfires. Yet Anderson is such an interesting filmmaker that even his less successful movies are worth watching. The Darjeeling Limited follows three brothers – Francis (Owen Wilson), Peter (Adrien Brody) and Jack (Jason Schwartzman) as they travel across India by train in search of their mother, Patricia (Anjelica Huston), whom they haven’t seen in years. Along the way, the brothers all come to terms with the recent passing of their father and what their lives are like now that they are on their own.

While Hulu added a lot of comedy movies in October, there just weren’t very many good ones among them. When the comedy movies’ Rotten Tomatoes scores are scarier than anything on Huluween’s horror movie lineup, then you have to find your laughs somewhere else. Thank You! The Darjeeling Limited balances comedy and drama quite well, with the brothers’ trip across India an excuse for Anderson to mine some pretty funny culture-clash jokes while also examining the very dysfunctional family that’s at the heart of the movie. Like the more recent Asteroid City, the climax achieves a bittersweet profundity that’s genuinely moving. The film looks great, of course, with some superb on-location cinematography that brings India to vivid life.
