MTV’s Music Channels to Go Off-Air After More than Four Decades; Fans Upset –

In an evolving world, emerging research continues to highlight concerns that could impact everyday wellbeing. Here’s the key update you should know about:

MTV’s Music Channels to Go Off-Air:

Paramount Global has announced on 12 October 2025 that five of MTV’s iconic music channels in the UK and Ireland — MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live — will be permanently taken off-air on 31 December 2025.

This marks the end of an era for music television, especially for viewers who grew up waiting eagerly for video premieres, countdowns, live performances and VJs introducing the latest tracks. MTV first launched in the US in 1981, followed by MTV Europe in 1987, and the first dedicated UK channel in 1997.

Over the years, these channels helped shape youth culture, popular music, and the way audiences consumed music and fashion — from the premiere of Michael Jackson’s Thriller to cultural phenomena like the European Music Awards.

The closures are being driven by changing viewing habits: more people now discover music through streaming services, social media and on-demand platforms, rather than traditional TV. Paramount is undergoing a broader cost-cutting and restructuring strategy in its global operations.

For many fans, the announcement has triggered waves of nostalgia — memories of staying up for music video premieres, tuning in for classic hits on “80s” or “90s” stations, or enjoying energetic mixes on Club MTV. It’s a farewell to more than just TV channels: it’s to a communal space where generations connected through music. As one former MTV VJ, Simone Angel, reflected, “It breaks my heart… MTV was the place where everything came together.”

Though MTV’s main flagship (MTV HD) will remain on air, its content is expected to focus more on reality programming rather than rolling music videos. Speaking of India, the team hasn’t announced anything about its closure yet.
