The Best Pokémon That Would Make Real-Life Pets

Since its early beginnings, many people have wanted the Pokémon world to be real. With over a thousand of these creatures to choose from, the thought of how they would act if they were real has surely gone through the heads of most players. As much as you may love your cat, dog, or bird, just imagine what it would be like to have your favorite Pokémon cuddling up to you at night or helping take care of things around the house. With that said, not every Pokémon would do well in a house all day. Whether it’s because of their size or the destruction they could accidentally invoke, there are sometimes better choices for a Pokémon as a pet.

Mr. Mime

We’re going to get what is easily the most awkward situation out of the way with Mr. Mime. Some people look at Mr. Mime’s naming and bipedal nature and think that they are some kind of human. Just because a creature is humanoid doesn’t mean they are actually human. In the Pokémon world, Mr. Mime is easily a wild creature.

With that being said, we think Ash’s mom from the anime series has the right idea by having a Mr. Mime as a companion in their home. Think of how it could easily help you with all the chores around your house and also set up an invisible wall defense around your place from things like burglars. Some people are a little thrown off by Mr. Mime’s appearance, but that wouldn’t turn us away from what would easily be a very helpful housekeeper.

Swablu/Altaria

Swablu is the cotton bird Pokémon, and, in a slight throwback to our Mr. Mime entry, would love to keep your house clean if it were your pet. From its Pokémon Sapphire Pokédex entry: “Swablu loves to make things clean. If it spots something dirty, it will wipe and polish it with its cottony wings. If its wings become dirty, this Pokémon finds a stream and showers itself.” So we’ve got another pet that would help take care of the accumulating dust in your house.

Additionally, Swablu is a very friendly Pokémon. It likes to perch on people’s heads, and we can only imagine its cottony wings are quite smooth and nice to touch. Its evolution, Altaria, would also bring the added bonus of beautiful singing to soothe you throughout the day.

Furret

Furret would be a great choice for anyone who likes having a ferret in real life. Ferrets are larger, but occupy the same kind of space. They are essentially a long tail of fur that like to curl up and cuddle their offspring, so we imagine they would act the same with their trainers. If you live out on some farmland, we think watching a Furret run around in a field and hunting Rattata would be a useful way to keep those pests out.

Minccino/Cinccino

Look at that, it’s another Pokémon that knows how to take care of itself in a clean manner, though according to some Pokédex entries, it’s a little bit too much of a neat freak. It may be so focused on cleaning your place that you never actually see it rest and play with you.

From it’s Pokédex entry in Pokémon Ultra Sun: “A clean freak that will not allow even the slightest mess, it uses its tail like a mop to thoroughly clean any and all filth.” Also from Ultra Moon: “When its tail has gotten dirty from self-cleaning or from cleaning its nest, Minccino spends a whole day washing its tail in clean spring water.”

While your pet Minccino will almost always be cleaning, if you are the kind of person who likes having a cat around because it doesn’t need your attention 24/7, we would say this would be quite the substitute. Both Minccino and its evolution, Cinccino, have fur that “feels amazing to touch,” and who doesn’t love a chinchilla?

Snubbull

Snubbull is a bulldog-like Pokémon that has an intimidating presence, but is actually quite timid and loving. Multiple Pokédex entries throughout the series reference how women, in particular, love Snubbull for its affectionate personality and kind behavior. When threatened, its mean, scary face and growls are actually a way to hide its true fear in battle.

Dogs in general are very protective animals, and Snubbull would definitely do all it can to protect its owner while giving them all of the love that they could at home. It loves to sleep, so they also wouldn’t be a pet that tire you out through the day as you try to get some work done.

Skitty/Delcatty

Skitty is about as close to a real-life cat as Pokémon gets. It’s a small, cute creature that is quite popular for its looks and behavior. It also likes to chase things around, including its tail, so if you like a playful nature in cats, Skitty would be a fun addition to your home.

That kind of praise also carries over into its evolution, Delcatty. As mentioned above, many people who have cats like that they can exist on their own without the need for attention. That is Delcatty’s whole shtick. According to the Pokémon Ruby Pokédex entry, “Delcatty prefers to live an unfettered existence in which it can do as it pleases at its own pace. Because this Pokémon eats and sleeps whenever it decides, its daily routines are completely random.”

Ditto

In Ditto’s base form, it’s not necessarily cute, and you wouldn’t expect much out of it in regard to being a pet. That said, it can literally transform itself into any other Pokémon. Just one look at anything and it can transform into what either of you want it to be at that moment. Want some help with the house cleaning? Ask it to transform into Swablu, Minccino, or Mr. Mime. Need a quick ride somewhere? Have it change into a large bird Pokémon. There are many ways that a Ditto could be a useful helper, but it also deserves some praise in its normal form. It’s trying its best to make you happy. Return the favor.

Yamper/Boltund

You cannot look at Yamper and tell us that you would not love to have that puppy running around your house. The main reason why we kept most Pokémon with elemental types off of this list is because of the danger that would come with them existing in a normal home. Think of a Charmander’s tail lighting the couch on fire. While Yamper is an electric Pokémon, its electric charges are only slightly expelled when its running around. It can’t fully control it, but it’s nothing that sounds worse than a static electricity shock.

When Yamper evolves into Boltund, you have a true playful pal. According to its Pokémon Sword Pokédex entry, “This Pokémon generates electricity and channels it into its legs to keep them going strong. Boltund can run nonstop for three full days.” Just think of taking your Boltund to a dog park and it starts running laps around the other dogs there. It would be a fun pet to have in your life.

Chansey/Blissey

Chansey would make a brilliant real-life pet because it goes out of its way to deliver happiness and take care of others. If you watch any of the anime series, you will regularly see Chansey alongside Nurse Joy as it helps to heal injured and sick Pokémon, so imagine that kind of treatment in your house. Additionally, the egg in its pouch is very nutritious, and it will gladly give the healing power of that to anyone it sees injured. Did you scrape your knee? Eat this delicious egg that will help take care of your wounds. Can’t sleep at night? Chansey learns the move Sing, and unlike Jigglypuff, won’t get upset when you fall asleep to its performance.

The added benefit of having a Pokémon that lays multiple delicious, nutritious eggs a day? Less money going towards your groceries every week. Chansey is a caring Pokémon that will help you in every facet of your everyday life and that only goes a step further when your relationship gets so good with your Chansey that it evolves into Blissey.

Eevee/All Eeveelutions

Could there possibly be any other Pokémon that could beat out Eevee as the best all-around choice for a pet in the real world? It’s an adorable normal type that regularly adapts to the environment it is in. Of course, Pikachu is the face of the series, but everyone can take one good look at fox-like nature and fall in love with it. Cuddling up to that tuft of fur at night would help heal a lot of depression from the day for people.

What about if it’s time for Eevee to evolve? Any of its evolutions would still make a great pet, although you would need to be careful of the fire, water, ice, and electrical ramifications on your house if they accidentally let loose one of their abilities. That being said, an Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, or Sylveon seem to have no downsides in our minds.
