LOS ANGELES (KABC) — One in eight U.S. adults struggle to breathe and battle the persistent pain and discomfort of chronic sinusitis. Even with sprays, irrigations and pills, a staggering 80% of people can’t find relief.
Now, there’s a potentially game-changing approach.
What is chronic sinusitis?
Chronic sinusitis is a condition where inflammation of the sinus lining causes debilitating symptoms.
Now, an FDA approved device called XHANCE utilizes an innovative exhalation delivery system. So instead of simply sniffing, patients blow into a mouthpiece while spraying, sending steroid medication deep into the sinuses.
“A lot of these traditional nose sprays patients sniff in, and it might hit the front of their nose, but they really don’t go in the sinuses,” said Otolaryngologist Dr. Nick Debnath.
“The roof of the mouth will close and the medicine will stay in the sinuses and not go down the throat,” he added. “That’s why XHANCE works.”
XHANCE is the first and only approved treatment for people suffering from chronic sinusitis without nasal polyps. Taken twice a day, this targeted treatment is giving Jonathan Davis – an avid golfer – his best shot yet at returning to the game he loves.
His doctors attempted everything to help him find relief, from antibiotics and a nebulizer to multiple surgeries and two balloon sinuplasties.
“I tried everything under the sun to try to get rid of this issue,” he said.
“The worst was going from somebody who would be wanting to go out every day of the week to wanting to just stay at home and be in bed,” Davis added.
Doctors emphasize that the XHANCE system is considered very safe for most patients. As with any medication, those with pre-existing conditions like glaucoma or cataracts should speak with their physician beforehand.
