Paramount Plus just added 117 new movies — here’s the 5 I’m streaming first

Paramount+ just added an impressive 117 new movies to its streaming service to kick off February. If that number overwhelms you, I get it. That’s a lot to sort through, and it’s tough to figure out which movie to start watching first.

The good news is, I’ve already looked through everything coming to Paramount+ in February, and I know exactly where you should start your movie marathon today. I’ve curated a selection of five movies to add to your watchlist, including one of the greatest movies ever made. There’s also an incredibly clever semi-autobiographical comedy drama that’s beloved by many across generations, a found footage horror movie that’s guaranteed to be a hit for any fan of the genre, a classic Nic Cage action thriller movie and a coming-of-age film that’s a must-watch for any budding cinephile.

Genre: Semi-autobiographical comedy-drama

What’s it about? Written, directed and produced by Cameron Crowe, this movie is a somewhat true retelling of his time as a teenage writer for Rolling Stone magazine. It stars Patrick Fugit as William Miller, the stand-in for Crowe, and follows him as he goes on tour with the fictional rock band Stillwater in hopes of landing his first big story.

Why you should watch it: Considered one of the best films of the 2000s, this movie is funny and charming and loaded with acting talent. Billy Crudup, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand put in incredible performances. Incredibly, this movie might be Crowe’s best, despite his impressive résumé.

‘Cinema Paradiso’

Genre: Italian coming-of-age comedy drama

What’s it about? “Cinema Paradiso” is set in the aftermath of World War II. It’s centered around a young Sicilian, Salvatore Di Vita (Salvatore Cascio), who spends most of his time at the local theatre, the titular Cinema Paradiso. There, he meets a middle-aged projectionist, Alfredo (Philippe Noiret), who helps nurture a lifelong love of film and teaches Salvatore how to be a projectionist.

Why you should watch it: Taking place across several decades, this film is considered an all-time great. It won the Cannes Film Festival’s Grand Prix and then followed up that success with a win for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, and is a must-watch for anyone who proclaims to love cinema.

‘Cloverfield’

Genre: Found footage monster horror

What’s it about? On May 22, 2008, a monster, later dubbed “LSA” (Large-Scale Aggressor) by the U.S. Department of Defense, attacks New York City. Using video found on a personal camcorder, this movie recreates that night, centered around six friends’ attempt to flee the city as the monster attacks.

Why you should watch it: While “The Blair Witch Project” might be the best found footage movie ever, “Cloverfield” deserves mention in the tier just below it. It’s definitely a relic of its time, but the tension this movie creates and then executes on is brilliantly crafted.

Genre: Sci-fi action thriller

What’s it about? FBI special agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) has been chasing down violent criminal Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage) for years. After a traumatic incident, this shifts to a mission for revenge, and Archer turns to a revolutionary new technology that could give him the edge against Troy.

Why you should watch it: The movie’s title alludes to this, but the conceit of the movie is that Archer manages to turn himself into Troy, and Troy then transforms into Archer. By the end of this John Woo action thriller, both men fully immerse themselves in the other’s being to try and gain victory, creating a unique and incredible movie.

‘The Godfather’ (1972)

Genre: Gangster drama

What’s it about? This film marks the first chapter in “The Godfather” trilogy, and centers around Michael Corleone (Al Pacino). Son of Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), the movie chronicles his somewhat reluctant ascent from young war hero to ruthless Mafia crime lord.

Why you should watch it: Arguments can be made that “Goodfellas” or “The Godfather: Part II” (also on Paramount+ this month) is the superior Mafia movie. But what’s inarguable is that this movie is incredible and deserves to be discussed with those two movies as not just a great mobster movie, but one of the greatest films ever made. The cast alone is reason to watch: Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall and Brando all score Oscar nominations, with Brando winning Best Actor for his portrayal of Vito.
